Evaluation of Researcher Support Programmes: Assessment within Development Events, and the Attitudes and Experiences towards Academic Careers Provision, of Early Career Academics (ECAs)

Martin Gough, Lecturer in Higher Education & Academic Practice, has won funding for an exploratory project starting Spring 2008 and continuing until the end of 2009.  The exploratory aspect requires some modest collaboration with staff who are involved in providing workshops, classes and longer courses and training which are designed to develop the research and academic competence of participants, where those participants are staff or research students.  Roberts funded provision is a typical example of this.

If you would be interested in being involved, however minimally, in the project, using this as an opportunity to contribute to the growing body of knowledge on academic development through sharing your wisdom, please contact Martin Gough by email or telephone on extension 7419.

The funding has been awarded by the Centre for Excellence in Preparing for Academic Practice, which is led by Oxford University’s Learning Institute.

The project is cross-institutional, involving project partners from the Network of Institutions linked to this CETL, Cambridge, Edinburgh and UCL, and other collaborating institutions through the UK GRAD hubs.

More about the aims of the Project:
Evaluation of courses and other learning activities generally is important for making judgements about the extent of the attainment of participants, and so this is the case also for provision serving to prepare participants in some way for academic practice, as part of researcher support “training” programmes.  The project will investigate:

  • evaluation methods and techniques for selected development events for their effectiveness in making and supporting those judgements;
  • assessment practices within selected development events for applicability and usefulness generally and as a mode of evaluation;
  • data, using PRES and CROS surveys, about ECA’s expectations and experiences of development events for patterns of feedback, as retrospective evaluation in itself and in order to derive, prospectively, useful evaluation and other themes.
