Beckie Whelton is an experienced research assistant, working with both qualitative and quantitative approaches, in the field of learning disabilities. She joined the Tizard Centre in 2003 working with Professor Mansell and Dr Julie Beadle-Brown and worked on an evaluation of Person Centred Active Support (PCAS) training.  The majority of her work has continued to be in this area as well as expanding into the areas of out-of-area placements, Adult protection and People with Profound and Multiple Disabilities.

Beckie has also worked at St Georges, University of London, as a research assistant working with Sheila Hollins, Irene Tuffrey-Wijne and Raja Mukerjee.

Beckie has hands on experience of services for people with learning disabilities.  She worked for 5 years in a residential service, working her way up from Senior to Deputy Manager as well as working with Older Adults and People with a Mental Health issues.

Beckie has a BA in psychology, is a qualified trainer in PCAS, and has been an Advocate for the past 8 years.

Beckie is particularly interested in improving the quality of service and quality of life for people with learning disabilities, which encompasses using Person Centred Active Support.  The effects of Out of Area placements, improving the support for people with Profound and Multiple learning disabilities. Beckie also has an interest in the healthcare of people with LD in particular Palliative Care. back to top

Beckie is currently involved in a number of projects;

  • Skilled Support - examining the effect of skilled staff support on the lives of people with complex needs in terms of both quality of life and cost.
  • Imagining Autism- which will examine the extent to which a drama intervention can help  children on the Autism Spectrum, and how best to evaluate this.
  • United Response –an evaluation of PCAS training in services over a 5 year period
