European Computer Driving Licence for Kent students

What is the European Computer Driving Licence?

Many jobs in business and commerce require "basic IT competence", but what does this mean? Maybe you feel you use a PC efficiently, but how do you prove this? ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) is a certificate that verifies your computer knowledge and practical computing skills. It is a qualification that has been designed to meet the needs of both employers and employees.

Who can take ECDL?

The registration fee is £90: this includes the purchase of your logbook, a training handbook and all test fees while you are at the University.

Students wishing to register for ECDL should call 01227 827501 or e-mail itbooking@kent.ac.uk to book for the next available induction session. These will run at the start of each term.

The ECDL syllabus

The ECDL syllabus covers the key concepts of computers, standard business applications, and uses in the workplace and society in general. It is divided into seven modules:

  • Module 1 - Security for IT Users
  • Module 2 - IT User Fundamentals
  • Module 3 - Word Processing
  • Module 4 - Spreadsheets
  • Module 5 - Database Software
  • Module 6 - Presentation Software
  • Module 7 - Using Email and The Internet

How can I study for ECDL?

All ECDL modules are self-study for Kent students.

  • ECDL Workbooks: are available from the IT training office (SE03, Cornwallis South).
  • Online Learning: the interactive online learning package provides material to support self-study for all modules of ECDL

If you need some help with an ECDL topic please e-mail itbooking@kent.ac.uk with the details and an appointment will be made with an appropriate person.

ECDL testing at the University of Kent

The University of Kent is an authorised ECDL testing centre. ECDL testing is carried out using computer-based software. You sit at a computer to take your test, your answers are marked and you are given the results of the test on screen. You may apply to take a module test whenever you feel ready to do so. Please note a mock test must be passed prior to a live test for every module.
Test dates can be viewed online and booked by email or telephone.
