Dr Najl Valeyev joined the interdisciplinary Centre for Molecular Processing in 2009. He is affiliated with the School of Engineering and Digital Arts and with Biosciences. Born in Kazan, Russia in 1981, Dr Najl Valeyev received his BSc in Biophysics from Kazan State University in 2002 then studied at the University of Oxford where he was awarded his PhD in Biochemistry in 2006. Since then, Najl has established a career in Systems Biology, specifically focusing on elucidating detailed mechanistic properties of signalling networks on systems level using a variety of computational tools. In 2006 he joined Professor Declan Bates’ Systems Biology group at the Department of Engineering at the University of Leicester where he employed multiple biophysical and engineering tools to resolve a fundamental question of how structural properties of a protein translate into the function in the context of a cell or a cellular pathway. He developed a new methodology for a protein structure-based mathematical model formulation that can link intracellular molecular signalling with cellular activity. In the beginning of 2008 he moved to King’s College London where he joined a biomedical group led by Professor Frank Nestle who specializes in psoriasis, a common form of inflammatory skin disease. At King’s, Najl computationally elucidated immune cell-cell population interactions based on cytokine production levels. In 2009 he moved to the University of Kent where he is currently a Lecturer in Systems Biology. His current research interests span over a range of predictive systems biology tools to increase understanding of underlying mechanisms in human disease.
