Sciences@Kent
The current Faculty of Sciences dates from 1st August 1997 when the previous Faculty of Information Technology and the Faculty of Natural Sciences were merged to create a three-Faculty (Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences) structure within the University. The Faculty comprises a number of Schools and Centres designed to support teaching and research in science-based disciplines. Over 3000 students are registered in the Sciences Faculty.
Teaching
Most of the teaching is lead by Schools based on the Canterbury campus i.e. School of Computing UG / PG, School of Engineering and Digital Arts UG / PG, School of Biosciences UG / PG, School of Physical Sciences UG / PG (in which our teaching of Physics, Pharmaceutical Science and Forensic Science is based) and the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science UG / PG. In addition, Pharmacy is taught within the Medway School of Pharmacy UG / PG, a unique collaboration between the Universities of Kent and Greenwich on the Medway campus. We also have close relations with the new Kent Science Resource Centre at Kent Science Park near Sittingbourne and we validate the Foundation Degree in Life Science Laboratory Technology and Bio-manufacturing that is taught there by Mid-Kent College.
Research
Research within the Faculty is organised into cohesive research groups, either within Schools: Biosciences, Computing, Engineering and Digital Arts , Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science and Physical Sciences, or within and across Schools as Centres: Centre for Biomedical Informatics, Centre for Astrophysics and Planetary Sciences ), Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience and Cognitive Systems, UK Biometrics Institute, National Centre for Statistical Ecology and the new Centre for Molecular Processing. Click here to see a summary of these groupings and hence a basic overview of the types of research undertaken within the Faculty. Both theoretical and laboratory-based scientific research is carried out, the latter demanding expensive state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. As a consequence, the Faculty is by far the largest earner of external research funds (55%), and contributed over £8.6M to the total of £14.6M of University acquisitions via Research Grants and Contracts for 2007(Nov) - 2008 (Oct). More than 43% of research students within the University are registered the Faculty of Science.
Administration
The Faculty also includes the Faculty Office, based in the Marlowe Building, which serves to facilitate cross-Faculty initiatives and standardise administrative procedures. It also provides a home for the Dean and the co-ordination of other cross-Faculty activities such as the Schools Outreach programme and the ‘Sciences@Kent’ initiative.
