Statistics

Welcome to Statistics

In successive national research assessments we have maintained a research quality profile that puts us well within the top ten statistics groups in the country.

In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise in 2008, two thirds of our research output was judged to be internationally excellent or world leading, with virtually all the remainder judged to be worthy of international recognition. The panel noted particular strength in collaborative and interdisciplinary research.

The current Statistics group consists of 5 Professors, 1 Reader, 1 Senior Lecturer and 6 Lecturers. There are currently 2 post-doctoral members and 16 PhD students in various stages of progression. A recent photo of the group can be seen here.

Our research emphasis is on biological, medical, ecological, spatial and shape statistics, financial econometrics, genetics, risk and queuing theory, epidemic modelling and Bayesian non-parametric statistics. We can provide PhD supervision in a wide range of areas, including the following topics:

  • Statistical theory for MEG-based brain activity screening
  • Full Bayesian wavelet block thresholding method for curve estimation;
  • Robust wavelet estimation for unknown noise distribution;
  • Time series modelling with distributionally time-varying innovations;
  • Methods for detecting Drug effects using EEG data;
  • Statistical modelling of infectious diseases;
  • Parameter redundancy in Ecological Models;
  • Bayesian methods;
  • Time series;
  • Stochastic Processes and their applications in queueing or insurance;
  • New models for camera-trapping data;

Courses on topics such as Bayesian methods, Statistical ecology and Risk provide our MSc in Statistics with a special emphasis, on which we continue to build through research students and grants. An exciting new venture in 2011 is the launch of the MSc in Statistics with Finance. We actively seek to forge and consolidate links with other departments, such as Biosciences, DICE and Computing through research contacts and joint grant applications.
