In line with University policy, SMSAS's Personal Academic Support System (PASS) aims to provide the following:
At the School of Maths, Statistics and Actuarial Science, we respect your freedom to specialise in your area of interest, to read widely and independently, and to exchange ideas with staff and fellow students. We appreciate your individual needs and consider this to be an important part of the educational experience we are providing.
Therefore, it is important to know that we are happy to support you, not only through lectures and seminars, but also with your personal development via a multi-layered tutorial system.
The School has a dedicated Student Support Advisor who is responsible for supporting you during your studies both with your personal development and your general welfare. The Student Support Advisor should be your first point of contact for concessions and other general support queries such as careers advice and disability support.
The School's Senior Tutor is also a member of academic staff who is able to assist you with general academic related issues.
The Senior Tutor oversees the student progress monitoring system and liaises with you if there is reason for concern. In the case of serious concern, or when a student is considering intermission, the Senior Tutor will request a meeting with the student.
The Senior Tutor is also responsible for implementing academic discipline procedures in cases when a student fails to comply with the obligation to attend seminars and lectures.
In the modules you are taking, you will have lectures, but you may also have weekly tutorials/seminars. Both module convenors and Seminar leaders have regular office hours for further consultation.
Each student on a taught programme is assigned a personal tutor at the start of the academic year to assist you with any general academic queries in relation to your programme of study. If you require guidance, for instance on module choices, your personal tutor can help you. For further information on the role of the personal tutor, or to get in touch with your tutor, please log into Student Data System (SDS).
Each MA and PhD student has a Supervisor who is there to help with any academic queries you may have. Your supervisor is assigned at the start of the Autumn term, and will be named on the Student Data System. For research programmes, it is important to meet with your supervisor/supervisory team on a regular basis and the Postgraduate & Research Officer will remind you to schedule progress monitoring meetings as and when they are due. You can contact your supervisor directly, or via the Student Support Officer if you prefer.
Finally, the School will run a new system of peer mentoring, where experienced second and third year students will provide 'freshers' with valuable advice from a student perspective. This system is closely linked with the Academic Peer Mentoring Scheme which due to its ongoing success, we will continue to offer throughout the year.
