Kent's Schools Liaison team travel around the country, engaging and informing students about applying to, and life at university, as well as subject lectures and student finance talks. The team attends schools primarily in Kent, Medway, London, Essex, Surrey and Sussex. Requests to visit schools outside of these counties will be considered on an individual basis.
The team can attend parents evenings, careers events and most other higher education activities, delivering talks on the broader aspects of university study, the University of Kent itself, or a general overview of Higher Education today. We can also give tailored talks, please contact a member of the team to discuss your needs.
A General Guide to University
An introduction to Higher Education, covering a range of topics including why go to university, choosing a course and a university, UCAS and student finance (45 mins).
Why Go to University?
Outlines the benefits of studying at university, including career prospects, financial benefits, social and academic opportunities (30 mins).
How to Choose a Course and University
Emphasising the importance of doing as much research as possible. Advice is given on how to choose a course and institution, including the use of league tables and prospectuses and the importance of visiting the campus before making a final decision (30 mins).
Studying Locally
The pros and cons of staying at home to study and of moving away. Including advice on making the most of university life for students who study locally and also getting used to university accommodation for those who venture further afield (20 mins).
Student Life
The highs and lows of student life, including advice on adjusting to life at university. Meeting people, managing financially, and living on campus versus living at home are also discussed (30 mins).
UCAS and Personal Statements
Explanation of the UCAS process, detailing why early application is important, and giving advice on completing the UCAS form. Tips on how to write a good personal statement are included (30 mins).
Preparing for University Life
What happens after the student has submitted their application form to UCAS. The talk gives a timetable of events and covers making final decisions, interviews and tips for Clearing (30 mins).
Interviews
Advice on how to approach university interviews and what admissions tutors are looking for (30 mins).
Student Finance
Covers the four main finance questions students ask when considering HE: how much does it cost, how do I pay for it, how do I manage my money and what do I get for my money (45 mins)?
Time Planning Exercise
Helps students to think about time planning in the context of a university timetable; looking at contact hours, part-time employment and social activities. (30min) See the Time Planning Exercise pdf.
Budgeting Exercise
Encourages students to think about the average student budget; looking at outgoings (fees, accommodation and other living costs) and income (student loans, part-time employment, grants and other funding). (45min) See the Student Finance Budgeting Plan pdf.
Location, Location, Location
An interactive map of the UK which gets students to think about travelling to and from their chosen institutions. (30min)
Choosing a Course and a University
Helps students to think about the location, facilities and the academic and social amenities as a way of selecting their institution. (30min)
Prioritising Exercise
An in-tray exercise that helps students think about their time at University in terms of work-life balance. (30min)
