Year Abroad and Partner Universities

All students studying Italian are required to spend the year of study between the Stages Two and Three in Italy unless specifically exempted by Faculty Board. They may choose one of three options:

  • Option 1: Follow a full-time course of study at a partner university in Italy
  • Option 2: Teach as a language assistant (up to 12 hours per week) in schools in Italy
  • Option 3: Engage in full-time employment in an approved occupation anywhere in Italy.

Students studying Italian as a Joint Honours in conjuction with another language are required to spend half of their year abroad in Italy. Those taking Italian in combination with a non-language subject, though, are required to spend the whole year abroad in Italy.

Students registered at Italian universities will gain these marks from their oral performance in the language and from the modules that they take at the host university or universities. Students who spend the year in Italy as a teaching assistant or in other approved employment will gain these marks from their oral performance in the language and from written work submitted by 1 September for marking by Kent Italian staff.

The Italian Section of SECL at the University of Kent has Erasmus agreements with several Italian Universities. Their Home Pages can be explored below, where students travelling to Italy can also find some useful information about settling in.
