Current Postgraduate Students

Wissia Fiorucci, PhD Candidate (Supervisor: Dr. Lorenzo Chiesa)

Wissia is a PhD student in the Department of Italian at SECL, where two years ago she completed an MA by Research with a thesis on the author Anna Banti and her relation to Italian feminism. With the title ‘Anna Banti and the (Im)possibility of love’, the above mentioned thesis has recently been published by Cambridge Scholar Publishing. She also is member of the international research journal Skepsi, which she co-founded in 2008. Her current research deals with four Italian authors, that is Grazia Deledda, Anna Banti, Massimo Bontempelli and Giancarlo Pastore, focussing on their understanding and description of mother-son relationship. Her thesis specifically deals with interpretations of feminine authority throughout twentieth century Italian literature, with a direct insight on the authors' social and historical background.

Marco Piasentier, MPhil Candidate (Supervisor: Dr. Lorenzo Chiesa)

Marco is PhD student at the University of Kent and at SUM (Istituto Italiano di Scienze Umane), supervised by Dr. Lorenzo Chiesa and Professor Roberto Esposito. His thesis focuses on Biopolitics and Human Nature in Contemporary Italian thought, with the aim of demonstrating that a consistent and comprehensive analysis of the relationship between politics and life can only be achieved by breaking down the rigid dichotomy separating the Humanities and Natural Sciences. Marco is also an editorial member of Skepsi, the postgraduate journal in Humanities and Social sciences of the University of Kent. Before coming to the University of Kent (January 2011), Marco graduated cum laude in Contemporary Philosophy (October 2010) at the University of Trieste. Recently, he also held an internship at the Psychiatric Clinic “San Giovanni” of the same city – the testing ground in the 1970s for Franco Basaglia’s closure of asylums – which proved to be of great relevance for his research.
