University of Hong Kong Exchange Programme
University of Kent / University of Hong Kong Faculty of Humanities Exchange Programme
The aim of this programme is to give students a broader view of their disciplines by providing them with the opportunity to study in two very different learning environments, to acquaint themselves with a foreign culture and to learn/improve the command of a language as non-native speakers. Students from Hong Kong will enjoy immersion in English on and off campus. Students from Kent will have their lectures and seminars in English, but will spend roughly half of their study time in Hong Kong learning either Mandarin Chinese or Cantonese. While Cantonese is the lingua franca of Hong Kong, Mandarin is also spoken fluently by a very high proportion of educated residents. One clear benefit to both sets of students is improvement in career opportunities.
Students at the University of Hong Kong currently
have a three-year undergraduate programme, and would
spend the second year at the University of Kent. Students
from the University of Kent would spend the third year
of their
programme in Hong Kong and would return to
Kent to complete their degree.
While students will, subject to the approval of their Programme Director, be able to choose from a wide range of modules to study when abroad, each university will nominate modules that might be of special interest to the incoming ‘year abroad’ students.
Hong Kong is an exciting, vibrant city, a jewel in the South China
sea with many good beaches and easy access to Mainland China; Hong
Kong University is its premier university and is currently ranked the
18th best university in the world. Canterbury is a beautiful and charming
city. The campus of the University of Kent is spacious, green and secure,
and the Faculty of Humanities is one of the strongest in the UK, with
History ranked second in the country for research and French seventh.
