Undergraduate Studies

German may be studied either as single honours or as joint honours (in conjunction with e.g. English, French, Italian, Hispanic Studies, Computing, Drama, Film etc.). First-year courses cover grammar and translation, Landeskunde, Images of Germany post-1945 and Varieties of German Writing. Conversation classes are provided by language assistants with support from a full-time Lektorin. You may wish to check our entry requirements.

During the second and final years, language tuition becomes more specialised, and there is a choice of optional cultural, literary and linguistic modules, as well as scope for writing a supervised dissertation. The third year is normally spent abroad, either working (possibly as an assistant teacher of English) or at one of our 'Erasmus partner' universities (which currently include Erlangen, Freiburg, Heidelberg, Jena, and Marburg).

There are also three levels of language provision for those students who wish to begin or to pursue studies in German without making it the main focus of their degree. We offer modules for beginners and intermediate learners of the language, and a specially designed module for native speakers of German. Like all our modules, these may be taken as 'wild course' options by suitably qualified students from other disciplines and faculties.

As of September 2011, there is also the option of taking a degree in German ab initio. Suitably qualified candidates can study German from 'absolute beginner' all the way to degree level; for more details, see: German ab initio
