During Stages Two and Three, language tuition becomes more specialised, and there is a choice of optional cultural, literary and linguistic modules, as well as scope for writing a supervised dissertation. Students spend a year between Stage Two and Stage Three abroad, either working or at one of our 'exchange partner' universities.
German is available as a Single or Joint Honours degree. Single Honours students must register for between 180 and 240 German credits. Joint Honours Students must register for between 90 and 150 German credits in both Stages Two and Three. At least 90 of the credits you obtain must be at Level H to be eligible for an honours degree. In between Stages Two and Three, students take a Year Abroad (Stage A) which will total 120 credits but the year will be calculated as equivalent to one-fifth of the final degree result.
If you are studying German as part of a joint degree, you must also take into consideration the module requirements for your other subject when making your module choices. Please use the Programme Index to locate the rubric for your other subject.
Students of other disciplines may take German as a ‘wild’ module (30 credits) provided that they have the necessary linguistic competence (an ‘A’ level pass in German would normally be required). Such students must consult the Head of the German Section, Dr Ben Hutchinson, before registering their choice of German modules. Short-term students are welcome to take German modules, provided they are sufficiently competent in the German language.
Students studying German as a Single or Joint Honours subject or as part of a European Studies degree are required to spend the year of study between the Stages Two and Three in a German-speaking country unless specifically exempted by Faculty Board. These students may choose one of three options:
Students registered at German-speaking universities will gain these marks from their oral performance in the language and from the modules that they take at the host university or universities. Students who spend the year in a German-speaking country as a teaching assistant or in other approved employment will gain these marks from their oral performance in the language and from written work submitted by 1 September for marking by Kent German staff.
Students will sit Final examination papers at the end of the year of study in which the modules have been taken. All taught modules require coursework to be submitted. The examination format varies considerably between modules. (See Module Descriptions for details.) All students taking module GE503 must register for the examination as a whole, which constitutes 30 credits and is made up of a 3-hour translation and essay paper and an oral examination of 20 minutes.
Single and Joint Honours students are required to take one 30 credit Language module in each stage. Single Honours students are then required to choose at least 120 credits from the available option modules, and Joint Honours students are required to choose at least 30 credits from the option modules, or from modules taken from other subjects and approved by the Head of German.
