German Ab initio

Möchten Sie Deutsch lernen?

– Would you like to learn German but have never had the opportunity?

The University of Kent is pleased to announce the launch of an Intensive German course for absolute beginners, available from September 2011 as a wild option or as part of a joint honours degree programme.

What is it? – A two-module intensive beginners German course for students with very little or no previous knowledge of German, who want the option of studying German to joint honours degree level.

Why should I learn German?

  • German has the most native speakers of any language in Europe
  • Germany has the 4th strongest economy in the world, so there are good job opportunities for German speakers
  • Over 22,000 foreign companies operate in Germany, employing in excess of 2.1 million staff, generating trillions of Euros in turnover.
  • Graduates in German are the third most employable group after graduates in medicine and legal subjects.

Who is this course for? – Highly motivated students who want to improve their employability prospects, who can demonstrate a high level of competence as language-learners (equivalent to A Level in a second language), and who are willing to work hard in a supportive learning environment, aided by dedicated teaching staff and state-of-the-art language learning technology.

What will I learn? – You will develop the essential skills of learning a language, as well as a broad awareness of the diversity of German culture. You will be expected to work in groups and on your own, supported by coursework books and audio/visual self-study materials. By the end of the first year of the course, you should be able to:

  • Understand how the German language works and use it effectively.
  • Know and enjoy the German world – music, literature, film, theatre, eating and drinking, sport and leisure activities, for example.
  • Use your knowledge of German to make friends and take an active part in German social life.
  • Talk about yourself and your life and interests.
  • Travel around a German speaking country with confidence.
  • Perform in German at a level equivalent to a good grade at A-level (CEFR A2).

How can I take it further? – Selecting German from scratch as one of your joint honours subjects enables you to expand your knowledge and ability, so that you can live life to the full during your year abroad and other visits to a German-speaking country and benefit in later life from the experience and maturity you gain.
