Sources of Financial Support for International Students
Many international agencies such as the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the World Health Organisation provide funding for international students to study in the United Kingdom. Students are advised to consult relevant bodies at an early stage.
British Government and Commonwealth Awards
Colombo Plan Scholarships and Fellowships
Available in most fields of study relevant to the progress of developing countries. Open to nationals of countries participating in the Plan (includes Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Burma, Pakistan, Thailand, Indonesia, Iran, Korea, Philippines, UK). Request for an award usually made by a recipient developing country to a donor country; the UK is a major donor among member countries.
Details from the Colombo Plan administration in the candidates own country (normally located in Ministries of Economic Affairs, Development Planning etc). Candidates must be nominated by their governments for an award.
British Council Awards
Some awards and scholarships are organised through the British Council. Details of the award schemes should be obtained directly from the British Council's representative in the candidate's own country.
Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP)
Assists students from Commonwealth Countries for research postgraduate degrees. Nomination of candidates is by local committees in the Commonwealth country concerned. Final selection is made in the UK by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission. Applicants should apply through the Commonwealth Scholarship Agency in the Commonwealth countries involved. Applicants should be resident in their own country at the time of application.

FCO British Chevening Scholarships
These scholarships, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and administered by the British Council, are prestigious awards which enable overseas students to study in the United Kingdom. Scholarships are offered in over 150 countries and enable talented graduates and young professionals to become familiar with the UK and gain skills which will benefit their countries.
The Chevening programme currently provides around 2,300 new scholarships each year for postgraduate studies or research at UK Institutions of Higher Education.

Malaysia Special Provision Scheme
The British Government finances a special provision on a cost-sharing basis with the Government of Malaysia for students from Malaysia wishing to study in Britain on a full-time first degree or equivalent course at public sector institutions.
Awards can be given in any subject. Currently there are approximately 800 per year. The length of study is variable. The Malaysian Government nominates the recipients of these awards. Further information is available from the Malaysian Students' Department, 44 Bryanston Square, London W1H 8AJ.
Bermuda and the Cayman Islands
The British Government and the Governments of Bermuda and the Cayman Islands jointly fund a scheme for student from Bermuda and the Cayman Islands undertaking full-time higher education in the UK. Information may be obtained from the Governments of Bermuda and the Cayman Islands.
China
Sino-British Fellowship Scholarship Scheme
Awards available for advanced short-term studies of a practical nature in scientific, technological, medical and educational fields. Apply to Sino-British Fellowship Trust, C/O Coutts and Co Bankers, 440 Strand, London, WC2R 0QS.
Sino-British Friendship Scholarship Scheme
For postgraduate study either for PhD awards or research attachments in science, technology, medicine, humanities and social studies. The scholarship covers fees in UK for three years plus fares. Apply to Cultural Section of the British Embassy in Beijing or to the British Council, 10 Spring Gardens, London, SW1.
Turkey
British Scholarships will be awarded to individuals wishing to pursue postgraduate studies in areas which contribute to the social, economic and scientific development of Turkey.
Applications are encouraged particularly for study in the following fields: Economics, Political Studies, Social Sciences with direct application to social problems, Applied Sciences, Engineering, Business Administration and Management, Computer Technology, Information Services, Agricultural Science.
The scheme is open to all Turkish nationals with a first degree. There is no age limit. Funding is available for courses ranging from three months to three years, with provision for up to three months of English Language training in the UK prior to taking a place on a course.

South Africa
Commonwealth Nassau Fellowship
A scheme for non-white South African students to study in Britain. Preference is given to postgraduate students who have not already obtained a first degree. Details available in the UK from: Education Department, Overseas Development Administration (ODA), Eland House, Stag Place, London SW1.
The Africa Educational Trust
The Africa Educational Trust offer a number of scholarships to students from Southern Africa (mostly South Africa and Namibia), particularly for students who are unable to study in their own country due to political or educational discrimination.

African, Caribbean and Pacific Countries (ACP)
Awards from the European Community for the training of African, Caribbean and Pacific citizens. Applicants must be nominated by their own Government, which submits proposals to the local delegation of the European Commission.
