50th Anniversary Scholarships 2013 (PhD)

Covers tuition fees at the Home/EU rate, plus a variable maintenance grant to a maximum of the Research Council rate (£13,590 in 2011-12).

Scholarships will be offered for one year in the first instance, renewable for a maximum of three years subject to satisfactory academic performance.

The recipient will be expected to teach and administer seminars, attend the associated lecture, mark assignments and assist with field trips where appropriate.The total number of hours worked over the two twelve week teaching terms will not exceed the equivalent of six hours a week across an academic year (University Regulations).

Scholarship students will also qualify for free tuition on the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education programme.

Application criteria

  • A First or 2i Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject.
  • A Master’s degree at distinction (or equivalent) in a relevant subject.
  • Open to postgraduate research applicants from the UK and EU. In exceptional circumstances, candidates from outside the UK/EU will be considered providing they can submit evidence that they have secured funds from other sources to meet the fee differential at the time of application. The School will NOT be able to meet the fee differential for such students.

How to Apply

  1. Notify potential Anthropology or DICE supervisors of your interest in a scholarship and your research plans.
  2. Once a member of staff has agreed to supervise you, submit a formal application for postgraduate study on a relevant programme. Please state on the form that you wish to apply for a 50th Anniversary scholarship.
  3. After being offered a place, your Reply to Offer form must be received by the University by the Deadline below.
  4. Email a copy of your CV and research proposal (max. 2 sides of A4) to Shelley Malekia (S.Malekia@kent.ac.uk). If your project involves laboratory or field work you must additionally include a budget for these components and explain how these expenses will be met for the duration of the scholarship.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview in March - April. Successful applicants will be notified in early June 2013.

Deadline

The School of Anthropology and Conservation deadline to apply for this scholarship is Friday 8 March 2013.

All applicants who are successful in admission to the School by Thursday 31 January 2013 will be automatically considered for postgraduate funding, but will still need to follow the rest of the application process.

The University of Kent is proud to be part of the South-East ESRC Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) in partnership with the Universities of Reading, Royal Holloway and Surrey.

This centre of excellence in social science postgraduate research training will have studentships across the consortium for students commencing their studies in the 2013-14 academic year. PhD studentships will be awarded on the basis of the academic excellence of both the candidate and the research proposal.
