Scientific review

If your project is to be funded by a research grant, it is likely that the funder will conduct a scientific review as part of the decision-making process. This is sufficient for governance purposes.

If your project is unfunded, or has not received an independent scientific review by the funder, then a member of University academic staff must be identified to carry this out.

Your reviewer must be chosen according to the following criteria:

  • The reviewer must be a member of academic staff from another department
  • The reviewer must be nominated by the Head of Department in consultation with the PI
  • University conflict of interest guidelines must be followed when choosing the reviewer.

For unfunded staff research the PI's Head of Department must also confirm in writing that the necessary resources will be made available to complete the project according to the protocol.

A scientific review template form can be found in the related files box.
