Experience Excellence Studying People

The Student Progress System

Experience suggests that problems are often indicated by non-attendance at classes so we try to identify any potential difficulties students may be having and to provide help/support as quickly as possible – and, in some cases, to remind students what is required of them at the University.

Preparation for and attendance at lectures, classes or workshops is compulsory and you are expected to take an active role in discussion. Written work should also be submitted by the deadline.

How the system works

The School of Psychology closely monitors students’ progress. Workshop leaders and lecturers record and report on students’ attendance. Where there are ongoing concerns about a student’s attendance, failure to submit coursework or general performance, the student may be referred to the Senior Tutor within the School as a disciplinary matter.

What you need to do

Sometimes a problem will be identified that is not your fault (e.g. classes have been missed through illness). Sometimes, inevitably, a potential difficulty will be identified where there is no real cause for concern at all, e.g. you have an explanation for apparent difficulties or there has simply been an administrative error. So – please communicate with us! You may know that there isn’t a problem but we need to be sure as well.

Non-attendance

If you are unable to attend a lecture, seminar, workshop or supervision, you should do the following.

1.

Notify the Student Office using the dedicated Email address psychattendance@kent.ac.uk. In the Email you need to state the following:

  • Name
  • Email
  • Module name and/or number
  • Skills workshop or seminar group number, time and day
  • Date of non-attendance
  • Reason for non-attendance
2.

If you are sick for more than 7 days (including the weekend) then you also need to provide a doctor's certificate or other documentary evidence to support your absence.

PLEASE NOTE: it is your responsibility to ensure that your attendance is recorded on the registers at monitored sessions. It is not possible for the School to amend registers after the event.

Please remember that if you are experiencing problems which you feel may interfere with your studies or if you are concerned about your progress generally you can make an appointment to see the Student Advisor or call in to one of her drop in sessions. The Student Advisor's contact details are available on her Web page.

Late work

If your work is late, it needs to be accompanied by a concessions application with supporting evidence for the reason for the delay (please contact the Student Office or the Student Advisor for further information).

Board of examiners concessions appeals

If you believe your performance during a large part of the year has been affected by medical or other personal reasons, you can fill in a concessions form for the Board of Examiners. You should also fill in this form if you miss any of your term-time exams or if you think that your end of the year exams performance has been hindered by medical or other personal reasons. If you think you should fill in a concessions form for the Board of Examiners, you may want to see the Student Advisor to discuss this further.

Feedback, suggestions or complaints?

We welcome any comments or suggestions from students. In general, these can be submitted to the Student Advisor who will ensure that your feedback is raised at the appropriate committee meetings (e.g. Staff/Student Liaison Committee meetings) so that changes can be made as and when necessary. Alternatively you can submit your feedback via the School's suggestion box outside the Psychology Student Office or by contacting your student representative. You can also offer feedback via our School student survey, which we carry out every year.

If you have an individual complaint and you cannot resolve the matter with the person your concern relates to, please contact either the Student Advisor or the Head of School, Dr Joachim Stoeber (Email psyhos@kent.ac.uk). Alternatively, you can speak to an advisor at the Kent Union Advice Centre, which is independent of the University. Their contact details are available at www.kentunion.co.uk/pages/support/advice/.
