Research Ethics

All psychology researchers should follow the Code of Ethics and Conduct authorised by the BPS, which gives details of Ethical Principles covering: consent, deception, debriefing, withdrawal from the investigation, confidentiality, protection of participants, observational research, and providing feedback/advice.

All psychology researchers need to be aware of these principles and are also required to work in agreement with the 1998 Data Protection Act.

In addition, students and staff from the School of Psychology need to follow the School Guidelines for conducting research with human participants.

Does my project need ethical approval?

All research projects using human participants will need to be approved by the Psychology Research Ethics Committee via the online ethics application procedure. Please read this page for guidance on how detailed an application will be necessary.
