Centre for Swiss Politics

Welcome to the Centre for Swiss Politics. The Centre is a specialist unit of the Centre for Federal Studies based in the School of Politics & IR of the University of Kent. It is devoted to research, teaching and communication on Switzerland’s political system and in particular its distinctive features of federalism, direct democracy and neutrality. Established in 2003, the Centre builds on the slender but distinguished tradition of the academic study of Switzerland in the UK and provides an institutional framework to take it forward in the XXI century.

The Centre’s aims to:

  • provide a forum for advanced research on the Swiss political system within the University of Kent and between the latter and the wider UK academic community involving seminars, conferences and publications
  • co-ordinate undergraduate and postgraduate teaching of Swiss politics, mainly through specialist sessions on team-taught modules
  • promote a greater understanding of Switzerland and of its political system in British academia and public life. In particular, the Centre acts as a reference point for political information for the media.
  • develop and strengthen academic links between the UK and Switzerland in the field of research and teaching.

On the other pages of this section, you will find details on the background to the establishment of the Centre, its staff and its research activities. Thank you for your interest.
