Research and funding2011 Census Output Consultation
The purpose of the consultation is to allow users of census data to help shape the main statistical outputs for the 2011 Census. The consultation is open to everyone, including members of the public. Specific guidance and information about how to proceed can be downloaded from the Office for National Statistics website. No Winners: The reality of short sentenced prisoners
The Howard League for Penal Reform and the Prison Governors’ Association are seeking to commission a researcher to look at short-term prison sentences from the perspective of those serving short sentences and those working in prisons. The focus of the study is adult men serving sentences of up to 12 months in local prisons in England and Wales. The research is to be undertaken and written up by November 2010. British Academy, International Agreements Research Visits: an opportunity for scholars of post-doctoral or equivalent status who wish to do their own research in one of the countries with which the academy has a bilateral agreement in the fields of the humanities and social sciences. Joint Projects: support for joint projects between scholars in the UK and countries with which the academy has bilateral agreements in the fields of the humanities and social sciences, lasting between one and three years. Journal of Human Rights Practice: call for papers for special issue on 'Responsibility to the Story'. Call closes: 15 March 2010. This issue will bring together academics, practitioners and artists to explore ethical concerns surrounding the use of testimony in human rights story-telling. The journal, based at the Centre for Applied Legal Studies (University of York), partly emerged from a human rights practice stream at the 2008 SLSA Annual Conference. - Government and Markets: Toward a new theory of regulation by Edward Balleisen and David Moss (eds), CUP, is an interdisciplinary effort to advance thinking about the economic role of the state. Much of the volume focuses on approaches that complement the socio-legal approach to regulation, and the essays try to point beyond the traditional models (such as market failure, the economic theory of politics, and command and control) which have shaped regulatory studies over the last few decades.
