The University's annual residential Summer School for partner schools has been deemed a resounding success by all those involved.
Attended by more than 50 Year 11 pupils, the Summer School (4 - 10 August) was designed to give them a taste of university life, from both an academic and social perspective.
The pupils, all of them between 15 - 16 years old, were from: Archers Court Maths & Computing College, Dover; Chapter School, Strood; Chaucer Technology School, Canterbury; The Folkestone Academy; Fulston Manor School, Sittingbourne; Hextable School; The Howard School, Rainham; The Hundred of Hoo School, Rochester; The Marlowe Academy, Ramsgate; Pent Valley Technology College, Folkestone; Rainham School for Girls; St Anselms Catholic School, Canterbury; St John Fisher Catholic School, Chatham; and The Thomas Aveling School, Rochester.
Staff and student mentors from the University were on hand for the week, providing each pupil with encouragement and support as they participated in a programme of fun and challenging activities. These ranged from debating the ethics of animal testing to setting up a new political party, or attempting stand-up comedy. In the evenings, an exciting timetable of supervised social activities ensured there was never a dull moment as students tried their hands at karaoke, circus skills, bowling and creating a performance piece for an end-of-week variety show.
On the final night, students and staff attended a formal dinner where students were awarded certificates for successful completion of the week. This was followed by an 'end of School' disco.
Summer School Assistant Sophie Baker from the University's Partnership Development Office said: 'The last night was the perfect way to celebrate a memorable week, and one that was summed up perfectly by one student on her evaluation form - "Summer School is wicked. It's the best experience you could ask for".'
