Professor Podoleanu was made a Fellow of the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) during its annual Photonics West conference in San Francisco, USA.

SPIE was founded in 1955 to advance light-based technologies and now has over 180,000 members in more than 170 countries. Fellowships are awarded to members who have made significant scientific and technical contributions in the multidisciplinary fields of optics, photonics and imaging.

Professor Podoleanu received his Fellowship for his pioneering work in ophthalmic imaging and optical coherence tomography. He commented: 'I highly value the SPIE recognition as a reward for both my own contributions and achievements over the last 18 years by my talented colleagues in the Applied Optics Group within the School of Physical Sciences.'

Professor Mark Burchell, Dean of the University's Faculty of Sciences, said: ‘We are very proud of Professor Podoleanu's academic achievements. It is very pleasing to see a major, world-wide society honour him with one of its fellowships which is a mark of great distinction. I can only say that it is well merited and reflects Professor Podoleanu’s standing with his colleagues both here at Kent and internationally.'
