Open seminar to ask 'how real is Bridget Jones?'

An Open Seminar at the University of Kent's Canterbury campus is to address the issue of intimacy in the twenty-first century, asking 'how real is Bridget Jones?'

The seminar, which will take place 9.30-11am on Wednesday 12 November, will be given by Dr Jan Macvarish, Research Associate at the University's Centre for Health Services Studies, and is free and open to all. Places can be reserved and further information can be obtained by contacting Helen Wooldridge on 01227 823052 (email: h.l.wooldridge@kent.ac.uk).

Dr Macvarish, an authority on the sociology of interpersonal relationships, parenting, family life, sex and intimacy, has previously conducted research exploring contemporary singleness through interviews with single, childless, midlife women in the UK and the cultural analysis of media representations of the 'new single woman'.

For her seminar she will draw on this research while aiming to address questions such as: why are increasing numbers of people living alone; have we fallen out of love with love; are couples passé; and is parenthood just another lifestyle choice?
