This year's music prizes at the University of Kent have been awarded to six outstanding students, all of whom reflect the breadth of musical talent, dedication and enthusiasm of the many students who make music while studying for a wide range of degrees.
The students, whose academic studies range from languages and law to history and politics, recently received their prizes and congratulations from Rosie Turner, Director of the Canterbury Festival, Jonathan Monckton from the Colyer-Fergusson Trust, and Professor Keith Mander, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kent.
The six students are: Luke de Pulford and Carina Trigwell, joint recipients of the Canterbury Festival Music Prize; Robert McKay and Daniel Wheeler for the 2008 Colyer-Fergusson Music Prize; Matthew Billingsley, who was awarded the University Music Awards Committee Prize; and Piran Legg, who received the University Music Prize. These singers and instrumentalists all performed in the University's choirs, orchestras and bands, and also received Music Scholarships.
Susan Wanless, Director of Music at the University of Kent, said: 'As always, I am amazed at the high standards and commitment of all the student musicians at the University, particularly since they make all their music 'out of hours', alongside their academic studies.'
'Thanks to the continued generosity of the Canterbury Festival and our other supporters, these prizes highlight our students' achievements and give them the recognition they so richly deserve.'
