Lord Moynihan, Chairman of the British Olympic Association (BOA), member of the Olympic Board and a non-executive Director of The London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and The Paralympic Games, will give an open lecture at the University of Kent's Medway campus on Wednesday 31 October at 6pm.
The lecture, titled 'The Olympic Legacy from London 2012' will take place in the Pilkington Lecture Theatre and is free and open to all.
Lord Moynihan, who announced he would step down from his role later on this year, is Chair of the Association of National Olympics Committees Autonomy Commission, which concentrates on the relations between the 205 National Olympic Committees and their governments, as well as an Executive Board Member of the European Olympic Committee. He played his part in the best British medal performance in more than a century by overseeing the £13m support operation for the athletes during London 2012. He remains in post until elections for his successor are held in November.
Professor Louis Passfield, Head of the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences, said: 'We are delighted to welcome Lord Moynihan to the campus for what promises to be a very stimulating lecture.
The issue of Olympic legacy is one that our own researchers have considered. The whole nation is hoping the fantastically successful London 2012 Games will provide a boost to sports participation in the UK, and I'm looking forward to hearing Lord Moynihan's views on this.'
A former Conservative MP, Moynihan has chaired the BOA since October 2005. He was also a Rowing Silver Medallist in the 1980 Olympic Games, a Gold Medallist in the Lightweight Rowing World Championships in 1978 and a Silver Medallist at the 1982 World Championships.
In addition to his Olympic involvement, Lord Moynihan is a Director of Rowan Drilling. He has been a Member of Parliament in the United Kingdom for ten years, and held the position of Executive Chairman at Pelamis Wave Power, Consort Resources Limited and Clipper Windpower Europe Limited.
