The Centre for Language and Linguistic Studies at the University of Kent's School of European Culture and Languages (SECL) will launch with a public lecture on Thursday 28 February.
The lecture, titled Genocide and Ethnocide: The Suppression of the Cornish Language, will be given by Dr Jon Mills from the University's English Language Unit and will take place at 5.15pm in Keynes College Lecture Theatre 5 on the University's Canterbury campus. It is free and open to all.
The Centre for Language and Linguistic Studies aims to provide a forum for research collaboration and research-led teaching outside the confines of SECL and its language sections (English Language Unit, German, French, Spanish and Italian). Among those to benefit will be other sections and departments across the University who have identifiable linguistic interests - for example Anthropology, Classics and Archaeology, Computing, Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology - as well as local schools and members of the community.
Dr John Partridge, Lecturer in German and Linguistics at the University of Kent and Director of the Centre for Language and Linguistic Studies, is among those looking forward to the launch and Dr Mills' lecture. He said: 'Dr Mills' lecture and the formal launch of the Centre for Language and Linguistic Studies mark a significant stage in the re-establishment of linguistic studies at Kent.
