Kent Law Clinic shortlisted for major award by leading law journal
Kent Law Clinic, run by students and lecturers from the University, has been shortlisted for a major annual award by one of the legal professions leading journals.
The Clinic, part of the Universitys Kent Law School, has been shortlisted for the 2013 The Lawyer Award for Ethical Initiative of the Year in recognition of its work on immigration and asylum cases as public legal aid has been withdrawn.
It is a third shortlisting in the last four years for the Clinic, which is the only university-based legal service to feature in this year's awards lists.
Professor John Fitzpatrick, Director of Kent Law Clinic, said: 'It's a great achievement to be shortlisted once again in these prestigious awards.
'The work the Clinic is doing in the area of immigration and asylum law has become increasingly important as public legal aid has been withdrawn.
'We have a specialist solicitor working in this field based at the Clinic and liaise with a number of local organisations to review cases and represent refugees and asylum seekers. Our students work alongside our Clinic lawyers to represent clients.'
The Lawyer Awards celebrate excellence in the profession across private practice, the public sector, commerce, industry and the Bar. Other award categories include Law Firm of the Year, Barrister of the Year, Chambers of the Year, and a range of awards for different areas of specialist practise. The winners of the 2013 Lawyer Awards will be announced in a ceremony at London's Grosvenor House on 25 June.
The Kent Law Clinic sees the University's students and academics working in partnership with solicitors and barristers in practice locally. It has two objectives: to provide a public service for local people who need legal advice and representation but cannot afford to pay for it; and enhancing the education of Kent Law School students through direct experience of legal practice.
