Jo Brand at the University of Kent

Comedian and writer Jo Brand will be in conversation with Dr Oliver Double at the University of Kent on Wednesday 13 February.

The event, which is part of the University's Spring Term Open Lecture Series, will take place at 6pm in the Brabourne Lecture Theatre, Keynes College, on the University's Canterbury campus, and is free and open to all. There is disabled access to Keynes College and the lecture theatre. EARLY ARRIVAL IS RECOMMENDED.

Jo Brand is one of the best-known comedians in the UK. A former psychiatric nurse, she began her career in stand-up comedy in the mid-1980s, becoming central to the British alternative comedy movement, working London's alternative comedy clubs, and appearing initially on the Saturday Live television show. By 1993, she had obtained her own series on Channel 4 (Through The Cakehole). Since then she has been a regular guest on such programmes as Have I Got News For You, Never Mind The Buzzcocks and QI. Her book, It's Different for Girls (Headline Review, 2006), was published to excellent reviews. She received an Honorary Degree from the University of Kent in 2007.

Dr Oliver Double is a Senior Lecturer in Drama and Theatre Studies at the University of Kent. Before becoming an academic he was a professional stand-up on the national alternative comedy circuit. He was also a member of Red Grape Cabaret and used to run The Last Laugh, Sheffield's longest running comedy club. He has appeared on Loose Ends (Radio 4), 100 Greatest Stand-Ups (Channel 4) and The Verb (Radio 3). He is the author of Stand-Up! On Being a Comedian (Methuen, 1997) and Getting the Joke: The Inner Working of Stand-Up Comedy (Methuen, 2005). St Pancreas, his recent taboo-breaking and highly personal one-man show on 'kids, death and diabetes' is now available on DVD.
