University staff Charity Trek

Angela raised over £3000 for the Anthony Nolan Trust

Dr Angela Maitner, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Kent, has raised over £3,000 to help the Anthony Nolan Trust continue its lifesaving work.

Angela from Grand Rapids, Michigan, signed up to the Inca Trail Trek in March 2008 and had just six months to prepare for the five-day, 80km, high-altitude trek.

Using a range of fundraising techniques, such as selling t-shirt sponsorship space, holding a pub quiz, a birthday raffle and hounding friends and family, Angela raised the sponsorship which will help in the fight against leukaemia.

The Anthony Nolan Trust has grown from the personal crusade of one mother to become a world leader in the field of tissue type analysis and tissue transplant technology. Although Shirley's quest could not keep her son alive, The Anthony Nolan Trust has given over 5,800 children and adults the gift of life since the charity was founded over 30 years ago.

Angela said 'I encourage anyone interested in, or inspired by, the story to donate to, or participate in, a fundraiser for Anthony Nolan, who, in addition to being an amazing organisation were very well organised, helpful, and supportive throughout the entire challenge.

'I've come away with a fantastic impression of Peru. The landscape was beautiful, and I'm incredibly grateful to our trekking guides and the crew of locals who helped with cooking and transporting camp. The entire challenge was an amazing experience.'
