Demand for undergraduate places at University remains high

Demand for undergraduate places at the University of Kent remains high from UK applicants, with increases in applications in a number of subject areas.

Among the University's schools to see a rise in applications are the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science, up by 19%, and Kent Business School and the Centre for Journalism, which have both had a 5% rise.

The University's high profile internationally is reflected in total overseas applications rising by 8%. Its reputation as a leading research university has also resulted in a 32% rise in postgraduate research applications from UK and EU students, with a 62% increase in applications received from international students.

Overall, the University has seen a 7.4% fall in its undergraduate applications, but this is in line with the national picture, according to Steve Holdcroft, Head of its Admissions and Recruitment Office.

He said: 'Despite the difficult economic conditions and the uncertainty caused by the rise in tuition fees, the University remains well placed to achieve its recruitment targets.

'Although we have experienced an overall fall in applications this was expected following last year's larger than normal rise in applications and is entirely consistent with the national picture and our rising entry requirements.

'Demand remains very strong in many subject areas, and we are having particular success in continuing to attract applications from increasing numbers of international students.'

Latest figures on applications to UK universities recruiting through UCAS were released on 30 June.
