Chinese Ambassador to the UK visits University of Kent

The University of Kent recently welcomed Her Excellency Madame Fu Ying, the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China, to its Canterbury campus. During her visit on Friday 7 March 2008, Madam Fu Ying, an alumna of the University, met with some of her former lecturers as well as Vice-Chancellor Professor Julia Goodfellow and Chancellor Sir Robert Worcester. She also met with academic staff and students from several University departments and took part in a roundtable discussion. In the evening, Ambassador Fu gave a lecture, titled Changing China in the Evolving World, to staff and students.

Professor Goodfellow said 'We were extremely honoured by Ambassador Fu's visit and very proud to welcome her back to the University. We were able to show her some of our first-class research work and also provide her with a taste of academic life here at Kent. We already have strong relationships with a number of universities in China and were pleased to be able to introduce her to staff involved in these projects.'

Ambassador Fu, who studied for an MA in International Relations at the University 1985-86, started her diplomatic career in 1978 as Attaché of the Chinese Embassy in Romania. She has been the Chinese Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the UK since April 2007. Prior to that, she was Chinese Ambassador to Australia; Director-General, Department of Asian Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ambassador to the Philippines and Minister Counsellor, Embassy in Indonesia.
