British Chess Championships to be held at the University

The British Chess Championships 2010 are taking place at the University of Kent between 25 July and 7 August.

One thousand chess players will visit the University’s Canterbury campus to take part in the 97th Championships of the British Isles, organised by the English Chess Federation (ECF). They include former world number four, Mickey Adams.

Nick Nixon, an experienced ECF coach, will provide free coaching to junior players. He will be available to go through participants’ previous games and to offer advice and help on all aspects of chess playing. Andrew Martin, an International Master, will also be on hand, providing daily commentary on the British Championships.

English Chess Federation President and an expert panel member on BBC2’s Eggheads, CJ De Mooi, said: ‘It’s an honour to be involved with the English Chess Federation at this time and this most prestigious event in our home calendar promises to be an exciting and inspiring experience.

‘We have enthusiastic representatives, from the world elite to those pushing a pawn forward for the very first time. The recent spectacular successes of individuals and organisers alike can only bode well for the future of the game we love throughout the country.’

Kevin Stuckey, Residences and Conference Manager at the University, said: ‘We are delighted to welcome the British Chess Championships to the University of Kent and hope they have an enjoyable stay on the Canterbury campus.’
