Pioneering optics research by University scientists has formed part of a presentation at the Houses of Parliament.

Research by the Applied Optics Group in the School of Physical Sciences was among a selected number of projects chosen by the Institute of Physics (IoP) to represent UK universities.

The projects – which were all found to have high impact in the last national assessment of research excellence – were included in a booklet, titled Inspirational science for a modern economy, launched by the IoP at the Palace of Westminster reception on 7 July.

The booklet described Kent’s scientists as having ‘pioneered new research instrumentation to effectively image the eye, now used in eye clinics worldwide’. The research team combined two existing techniques to provide ‘rapid images at a higher resolution than previously available’.

Professor Adrian Podoleanu, Head of the Applied Optics Group, led the research team.
