Kent Law students will represent England in the International Negotiation Competition 2015 after winning the National Negotiation Competition.

Kent team Tomi Popoola and Sean Wells beat hosts University College London to claim the title of best student negotiators in the country in the national final on Saturday 21 March.

Sponsored by the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR), the annual competition is designed to develop an increasingly important skill for legal practice amongst future lawyers.

Kent was one of 12 student teams competing in front of a panel of judges that included academics, legal practitioners and Negotiation experts.

As a result of their win, Tomi and Sean will represent England in the International Negotiation Competition in Dublin in July. Kent will also host the national final of the Negotiation Competition next year.

Tomi, a final year Law and Business Administration student and Sean, a second year Law student, advanced to the national final after their performance in the South East regional heat in February.

Both students study the Law School’s Negotiation Module; one of two non-credit bearing Alternative Dispute Resolution modules (the second being in Mediation).

Both extracurricular modules provide an introduction to the skills required to resolve legal disputes without recourse to litigation. Students develop practical skills through participation in workshops and competitions.
