Debate on the future of the Euro attracts senior economics figures

A debate on the future of the Euro at the University has attracted several leading economists.

Titled Options for the Euro, the debate - forming part of a University finance seminar - will take place on Tuesday, 14 February at the Senate Chamber on the University's Canterbury campus between 3-5pm. It is open to the public and admission is free.

Taking part will be Bill Allen, formerly Deputy Director at the Bank of England, Dr Jon Danielsson, Reader in Finance at the London School of Economics and Luigi Speranza, Head of Inflation Economics at BNP Paribas Investment Bank.

The debate will be moderated by Professor Jagjit Chadha of Kent's School of Economics, who has advised both the House of Commons and Lords Committees on Monetary Policy.

He said: 'The future of the Euro as a currency is of great importance to the UK and so I'm looking forward very much to moderating this debate. Much of the recent economic weakness can be ascribed to some of the problems faced by our key trading partners.

‘The best solution probably involves a considerable reform of the monetary and fiscal structures that underpin the monetary union. But both time and co-operation seem to be in rather short supply.'

Members of the public wishing to attend the debate are asked to register for a place by emailing: c.r.norman@kent.ac.uk
