A filmmaking forum and Q&A with director and University of Kent alumnus Can Evrenol is part of a celebration of Turkish film.

Can Evrenol will introduce a special screening of his horror film Baskin at the Celebration of Turkish Film in the Gulbenkian theatre, Canterbury, on Saturday 6 February. The day runs from 11am to 9pm, although visitors may attend individual screenings or events.

Kent film lecturer, Emre Caglayan will present his talk ‘A Beginner’s Guide to Turkish Cinema, there will be a screening of the critically-acclaimed Winter Sleep and a Turkish menu will be available at lunchtime. The Celebration of Turkish film event is free and open to all but tickets must be booked in advance.

Murray Smith, Professor of Film Studies at Kent’s School of Arts, said it was a privilege for the University and School to host this event.

Professor Smith said Turkish cinema has been at the forefront of world cinema, producing a number of major directors such as Yeşim Ustaoğlu, Deniz Gamze Ergüven, Kazım Öz and Hüseyin Karabey.

Can Evrenol, from Istanbul, studied the BA Film Studies and History & Theory of Art degree at Kent’s School of Arts from 2003 – 2006.

Since then, he has independently written, directed and produced short horror films which have been selected at more than 40 international genre film festivals around the world. His most recent feature film Baskin premiered at Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness section. There’s no culture or tradition of horror in Turkish film.
