A free event at the National Maritime Museum on 28 September will present the public with the opportunity to learn more about WW1.

Organised by the University of Kent-based Gateways to the First World War, an Arts & Humanities Research Council-funded centre for public engagement with the War’s centenary, the event will enable visitors to:

• meet expert historians, archivists and museum curators
• undertake a guided tour of the new ‘Forgotten Fighters’ gallery
• explore documents and artefacts in the Museum’s Library
• listen to short talks by experts about the history of the war
• receive advice on researching family history
• meet representatives of organisations that run or support centenary projects including the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Imperial War Museum’s Lives of the First World War project, the National Army Museum and the War Memorials Trust.

The event will run from 11am – 4pm and is free and open to all. For further information please email gateways@kent.ac.uk

Kent’s partners in the Gateway project are the universities of Brighton, Greenwich, Portsmouth, Leeds and Queen Mary, London. The project also has close links with organisations such as the National Maritime Museum and the Imperial War Museum.

The aim of the project is to encourage and support public interest in the centenary of the First World War through a range of events and activities such as open days and study days, advice on access to materials and expertise, and signposting for other resources and forms of support.
