The latest book of poetry by Professor David Herd has been named a Book of the Year 2016 in the Sunday Herald.

Entitled Through (Carcanet 2016), the work examines ‘the ways in which contemporary public language has been rendered officially hostile’.

The Scotland-based Sunday Herald described Through as ‘that very rare book, violently political and artistic, especially in the light of Brexit’.

The collection is the fourth book of poetry by Professor Herd, who is Professor of Modern Literature and Head of the School of English, with his other works including All Just (Carcanet 2012) and Outwith (Bookthug 2012).

Professor Herd’s recent writings on the politics of human movement have appeared in the Times Literary Supplement, Los Angeles Review of Books, Parallax and Almost Island. He is also the co-organiser of the project Refugee Tales, now in its third year.
