Students and staff associated with the Centre make extensive use of the Cathedral Archives and Library. The compulsory MA course (Palaeography and Manuscript) is taught there because they make use of original documents. Members of staff in the Archives and Library teach, and work collaboratively with, members of the Centre staff.
The Archives and Library are adjacent, but separate, collections to which members of the Centre have access. In addition to work required for courses, it is common for MA coursework students to use documents and books at the Archives and Library as the basis for their dissertations. Similarly, research students working on their MPhil or PhD projects frequently use primary material located at the cathedral.
The collections in both Library and Archives are extremely rich and at the same time under-exploited. Past and present students have found the holdings of ecclesiastical court records, wills, and literary texts (both printed and manuscript) particularly fascinating and rewarding.
