Contraception - The coil

The IUD (Intrauterine Device)

A small plastic and copper device inserted into the womb by a doctor. The device prevents the sperm meeting the egg or may prevent an egg from settling in the womb. Two soft threads hang down into the vagina to allow the woman to check the IUD is in place, and to facilitate removal by a doctor.

Advantages
  • Very effective - 98%
  • Works immediately it is put in.
  • Can remain effective for 5-10 years depending on the type of device used, but can be removed at any time and fertility returns immediately.

Disadvantages
  • Periods may be longer or more painful.
  • Some partners report feeling the threads during sex.
  • Increased risk of pelvic infection, and possible subsequent infertility - so it is not suitable for young women who are at risk from sexually transmitted infection.
