Benefits of stopping

How soon will I see the benefits of quitting?
  • 8 hours after stopping: Nicotine and carbon monoxide levels reduce by half
  • 24 hours after stopping: Lungs start to clear out debris
  • 72 hours after stopping:
    • breathing becomes easier
    • you'll notice an increased ability to taste and smell
    • you'll have more energy
  • 2-12 weeks after stopping: Blood circulation improves, walking and running are much easier
  • 3-9 months after stopping: Coughs, wheezing and breathing problems improve as lung function increases

Stopping smoking can have a positive effect on your appearance, breath and smell.


Stopping smoking can be particularly beneficial if you are on the contraceptive pill - less risk of blood clots.
