Come back in one piece

Swimming and road traffic accidents are the major cause of injury and death among travellers.

If we think of accidents we often feel 'It won't happen to me'. When we are on holiday our inhibitions are generally lowered and out normal 'street savvy' guard is down. Chances are your stay will be accident free, but a few simple precautions can help prevent injury whilst you are away and yet still have a good time.

  • Remember alcohol impairs your judgement and physical awareness. Do not swim, drive or take part on potentially dangerous sports if you have been drinking alcohol.
  • Be careful when diving. Water may be shallower than it looks.
  • Check out the safety of swimming in local waters before taking the plunge. Strong currents and other dangers such as sharks may be lurking!
  • Always wear a crash helmet on motorbikes, and a seatbelt in cars.
  • If trying out a new sport - make sure training is given by those appropriately qualified to do so.
  • Talking of new sports - if you're planning on sexual escapades whilst away pack some condoms before you go as condoms may not be readily available or of poor quality. Casual sex greatly increases the risk of sexually transmitted infections protect yourself from bringing back some unexpected gifts!
