Introduction

The European Centre for the Study of Migration & Social Care (MASC) was launched at the University of Kent in March 2004 as a Centre for an expanding range of research and teaching activity in the fields of migration, social care and mental health. The Centre is within the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research.

MASC works with a range of international and national partners within academic and service providing organisations to:

  • Undertake research and evaluation studies of the impact of social care, health and mental health policies and practices on migrants and refugees
  • Identify examples of good practice in the health and social care of migrants and refugees and assess the potential for the disseminating of good practice
  • Develop a range of teaching programmes at undergraduate and post graduate levels to enhance the knowledge and skills of professionals working with migrants and refugees
  • Provide forums for the exchange of knowledge in this field and the application of this knowledge in service development.

The Workshop is open to all researchers, social care and mental health professionals, planners and policy makers interested in promoting best practice in services for migrant and refugee groups.

Professor Sandy Gifford, Director of the Refugee Health Centre at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia, is giving a seminar entitled; Using Visual Anthropology to investigate resettlement with refugee youth in Australia", on the 25th of June, 12:00-14:00, at Cornwallis NE, SR8, University of Kent. Seminars are open and free to all-coffee and tea available .
