Medway stduents

Medway student life

The lively campus atmosphere provides opportunities for socialising, sports, joining a society, or taking up a new interest.

There are cafés, a shop and a student pub on campus, all of which help to create a sense of community. Within walking distance of the main campus is the Chatham Maritime area which includes bars, a cinema, a retail outlet, and restaurants.

The Medway area also offers a dry ski slope and toboggan run, an ice rink and a karting circuit. Kent students can also use the state-of-the art sports centre, Medway Park, at discounted rates.

Student Union

Many social activities are run by the Greenwich & Kent Students' Unions Together (GK Unions), which represents all students at the shared Medway campus and is there to help ensure you will never be stuck for something to do when you put down your books.

Kent students are also members of the University of Kent student union, based at Canterbury campus.

GK Unions

GK Unions organises social activities and runs the student bar and the campus shop. Ultimate control of GK Unions lies in the hands of the students – GK Unions – co-ordinates all of the Societies and Sports Clubs on campus as well as the democratic structures which enable students to have their voice heard to the Universities. GK Unions also trains and supports Student Reps on each course to provide additional support and representation for students.

Events and activities

GK Unions run 'fresher' and year-round socialising events, many of which are held in the lively on-campus bar, Coopers. Events include the yearly Summer Ball featuring celebrity DJs.

GK Unions also organise sports teams, societies and a volunteer reward scheme. Details and photos are available on their official website and Facebook page (see right).

Advice centre

GK Unions' Advice Centre offers free, confidential and impartial advice on a range of topics including academic, finance, immigration and housing.

Student representation

Executive Officers (elected each year by the student body) represent students in areas such as education, welfare and student activities. This ensures that students' opinions are considered during decision making.

Student Reps for each course are also trained and supported by GK Unions, providing additional support and representation for students.

UMSA has won three major awards including the National Union of Students (NUS) Best Bar None award and accreditation from the NUS Services Sound Impact Scheme, which rewards good environmental practice.
