Recalling (reserving) items from other borrowers
If you need an item somebody else has on loan, you can recall (ie reserve) it. To do this:
- Find the item on the Library catalogue.
- Click Recall this item; unless you are logged in already you will be prompted to log into your Library account.
- Check the settings on the recalls screen and confirm your request by clicking Recall this item.
The other user will be sent an email asking them to return the item, normally within seven days of the recall request (except Part-time Collection 4 Week Loans, which users can keep for a minimum of 21 days). You will be notified by email when the item is available for you.
This system works both ways: if you have an item another user needs they can recall it from you. If this happens you will be sent an email with the date by which you must return the item.
Collecting recalled items
When an item you have recalled is returned, it will be held at the Loan Desk for you for a specific period, depending on the item type. You will be sent an email telling you how long it will be held for you:
- Ordinary Loans are held for 1 week; collect before the Loan Desk closes on the 7th day
- 1 Week Loans are held for 3 days; collect before the Loan Desk closes on the 3rd day.
- 3 Day and 24 Hour Loans are held for 1 day; collect before the Loan Desk closes.
After these limits have passed, items are either returned to the shelves for general use, or held for the next person in the reservation queue.
If I can't come to the Library, can someone else collect a recalled item for me?
You can authorise someone else to collect items you have recalled. To collect the item, the authorised person needs to visit the Templeman Library Loan Desk during staffed hours and present your KentOne Card/Library Card plus their own identification (either their own KentOne card, or another form of ID if not a member of the University). Without both IDs, the loan cannot be approved.
The authorised person will have to fill in a form at the Loan Desk. You will be sent an email notifying you that your books have been collected.
Items confined to the Library and Document Delivery items cannot be collected on behalf of someone else.
