Do you send Library reminders?

We try to help you manage your loans and avoid fines by sending you email reminders and overdue notices to your University of Kent account. These notices are sent as a courtesy only, so please do not rely on them. You are still responsible for returning or renewing items on time, and not receiving a reminder will not be grounds to appeal against a fine.

Log into your Library account to manage your loans and see the due times of your borrowed items.

What can I do to avoid fines?

  • Return or renew items by the due date and time.
  • Check your Library account regularly to make sure you know when your items are due.
  • Be aware that Ordinary Loan items can be recalled from you early - you will be sent an email with the new due date if that happens.
  • Note any email reminders we send you - but don't rely on them.
  • Don't let friends borrow items from you.
  • Don't borrow items on behalf of someone else - you are responsible for all items in your Library account.

Why can't I borrow or renew items anymore?

Your borrowing rights may have been suspended, which means you cannot borrow items from the Loan Desk or self issue machine or renew items online. This happens if:

  • you have unpaid fines of £10 or more
  • you have a Core Text Collection item or a DVD that is overdue by three days or more

Contact the Loan Desk as soon as possible to avoid fines building up further; you will have to clear your fines to below £10 or return the overdue book for the suspension to be removed:

Why do you have 24 Hour Loan items, and why can't I renew them?

24 hour loans are only:

  • items which need to be kept available to users at short notice
  • items not available as e-books
  • difficult to source items on reading lists, of which we are unable to obtain multiple copies

If you have enquiries related to Library stock, please contact the liaison librarian for your subject. You can also recommend a book for purchase by the Library.

Since 24 hour loans were made non-renewable in September 2010, Kent students have benefitted from:

  • an overall reduction of Library fines
  • an improvement in the circulation of high demand items

What happens if I lose a book or other item on my Library account?

The following charges for lost items will be added to your Library account:

  • The minimum charge for any lost item is £25, or the cost of replacement plus £5 for processing.
  • Additional administration charges may be levied, for example if we have to obtain a temporary replacement via Document Delivery.

If you subsequently find and return the item you will be charged the fine or cost of replacement, whichever is the lesser amount.

If you think you have lost an item issued to your account, contact the Loan Desk as soon as possible:

How can I pay my fines?

You can pay Library fines:

  • In person (cash): at the Library Loan Desk.
  • Online (by credit or debit card): charges over £5 only.
The payment will be applied to your Library account by 12 noon the next working day. If your Library fines are £10 or more, your borrowing rights will remain suspended until the payment has been processed; any fines incurred between the time of the payment and processing will be removed.
  • Please do not use the Finance links on the Student Portal to pay your fines, unless you have been billed by the Finance Department.

Students with outstanding Library charges are expected to clear them by the end of each term, when most outstanding charges will be transferred to the University's Finance division to be added to your finance account. Once charges have been transferred no further discussions can be entered into.

How can I appeal against a fine?

If you think there are legitimate reasons why you should not have to pay a Library fine or other charge on your Library account, please complete the Appeal against charges form (pdf). Paper forms are available from the Loan Desk, Level 1 West, where completed forms should be handed in.

What if I've returned or never borrowed the item?

If there is an item on your Library account which you believe you have returned or did not actually borrow, please complete a Claims returned or never borrowed form (pdf). Paper forms are available from the Loan Desk, Level 1 West, where completed forms should be handed in.

Fines can be paid:
