Subject gateways

Sometimes called "subject guides", "subject directories" or "information gateways", subject gateways are simply directories or searchable indices of web pages, documents and web sites on a given topic or range of subjects.

Subject gateways can range from loosely collated commercial directories such as Yahoo!'s subject categories , to collections of quality assessed web resources compiled by the academic or research community.

Using a good quality subject gateway in order to find web pages on your topic can be an effective alternative to using an internet search engine. The best subject gateways assess resources for quality before they index them. This can save you time if you looking for material to back up your study or research.

The information you obtain can be more reliable than what you would find via a search engine. There may be less need to appraise web pages for quality.

Some examples are available on the Library's subject guides web page, but a more comprehensive list according to subject coverage is given here.
