Special Collections

The University of Kent's Special Collections include archives and collections of valuable and rare books, and other primary source materials. Material of interest to English Literature students includes the Dickens' Collection, the Modern Poetry and Modern First Editions Collections, and the theatre collections.

The Special Collections reading room is on Level 4 East of the Templeman Library, and material can be consulted there by appointment.

Material in the Microform Collection

The Library holds several resources of interest to English and American literature on microform. You can find them through the Library catalogue. They include:

• back runs of newspapers, including some years of the New York Times (on microfilm)
• New York review of books (microfiche)
• Three centuries of drama: a collection of all English plays 1500-1800 and American plays 1714-1830 (on microcard)
• a large collection of 19th century London theatre playbills (microfiche)

Canterbury Cathedral Library

The Templeman Library has close links with Canterbury Cathedral Library and students have access to the Cathedral's archives and printed books. The Cathedral Library's holdings are included in the University of Kent Library catalogue.

The Cathedral Library contains about 30,000 books and pamphlets printed before 1900, and an expanding collection of over 20,000 books and journals published in the 20th and 21st centuries. It has particularly strong holdings in church history, theology, national and local history, travel, natural science, medicine and the anti-slavery movement.
