Reference Management Software

What it does...

Reference management software enables you to build a personal database of bibliographic records for each book, book chapter, journal article, or any other type of material that you have read or used as part of your study and research.

This saves you having to keep a written file of each reference.

Records for material that you have read can be downloaded from online searches, and the software used to insert selected references into Word documents (e.g. essays). The software will correctly format citations and the bibliography according to a chosen style.

All of the main citation styles in use by departments at the University of Kent are available for selection from these software packages.

  • EndNote - standalone reference management software installed on all University student and staff managed desktop PCs: suitable for research postgraduates or academics writing long theses or material for publication.
  • RefWorks - web-based reference management software - ideal for wireless networking, use in study bedrooms, and working off-campus: suitable for undergraduates, part-time students and postgraduates writing essays, assignments and shorter dissertations... (log into RefWorks)
